The history of pizza is quite extensive, dating back to Roman times, when the panis focacius, a traditional Roman dish, made use of toppings for the first time. Modern day pizza was invented in Naples, in the 18th century, and since then, this famous dish has spread throughout the world, including in every corner of the United States.

In the US, pizza made its first appearance in the late 19th century, when Italian immigrants made their way to the country for the first time. Later, small cafes and food places in the Italian American communities – particularly in New York City – started preparing pizza on a regular basis. Their success and popularity constantly grew as a result.

The first printed reference to “pizza” as a recognized dish appeared in 1904, when the Boston Journal mentioned the dish. Pizza also became popular in Chicago, Philadelphia and Saint Louis, all of which having already developed large Italian American populations by the beginning of the 20th century.
