We LOVE Pizza – But is it Healthy?

healthy living word cloud

The health benefits or risks associated with pizza have been questioned for a long time. However, recently, specialists have weighed up the pros and the cons and finally answered the question “Should we eat pizza or would it be better to avoid it?”. Surprisingly or not, 4 out of 5 experts said “YES” for pizza consumption, although the answer refers to traditional pizza preparation, not fast food.

Bad news is that a single slice of pizza has 14 grams of fat, so pizza consumption should not be exaggerated, in order to prevent assimilating too many calories, saturated fat and sodium.

On the other hand, pizza should be regarded as a kind of sandwich with cheese, tomatoes, vegetables and even fruits, depending on the chosen toppings. Tomato sauce has a significant nutritional potential too. Because it undergoes thermal processing, it contains even more antioxidants than raw tomatoes, according to a study from 2015.

For a healthier option, the traditional dough can be replaced with a recipe containing less fat and salt, but with richer fiber content. As such, if we use the right ingredients and appropriate proportions, pizza can be a nutritionally balanced meal.
